I am a local business owner and have been educating myself on the Benefits of Locally Owned Independent business. I am hoping the statement above is intended to suggest that corporately owned chains or franchises are something that people feel are need to `MAKE LIFE BETTER`in fact other than an initial boost that is most often very short lived (pretty much as long as any incentives last) then its all downhill from there. In fact you can almost compare them to shop vacs that literally suck dollars out of our communities into the pockets of others most likely not Canadian!
there is Nothing Original about a box store or restaurant – If you ask most people what there favorite place to shop or eat is most will recite the name of an independent business that is unique and a benefit to their community!

You make a good point … however, attracting commercial business (as a goal) doesn't have to just be about getting chains/franchises to come here. It also can mean creating the right conditions/incentives to start more local businesses within the City.

… And then there's the need to retain/support business once its here.
