Wetaskiwin needs more retail. If there was some choices people wouldn’t have to drive out of town to shop. It would also be better for the environment. Also new recreational facilities would be awesome for the city. Most important we need a pro-active not a re-active By-Law. A nice looking city would help attract new people to our fine city. Lets not let it get more run down looking than it already is getting to be.

This is one of the most common comments I get whenever I talk to people about the Wetaskiwin Tomorrow project.

A cleaner city is a happy city. I think things around town need to be kept up more. Lack of care is placing a hold on getting Retail business or any type of business in here. I agree on the points you are making.

If people of Wetaskiwin want more retail, they are going to have to make a strong effort to shop at the local stores we have left. If they are doing well others will notice. Also I agree Terry, cleanliness of the community is one of the most important factors.

Why doesn't City Hall make it more attractive for people to want to set up shop in Wetaskiwin. Offer tax breaks etc, whatever it takes.

I do support local business but find that I still have to head to Camrose, Leduc or Edmonton to find what I need. I was very excited about the new "common area" on the south side, but since I am not a fan of Walmart it is really quite anti-climactic. What happened to the other retailers who were to move in to that area?? Also I have not seen any other common area in a community named after one affluent family, so why here? It does nothing to promote community spirit but almost has the opposite effect.

I think that Wetaskiwin residents need to support their remaining stores as much as possible, but quite frankly those remaining stores aren't making much of an effort to attract clientele. The sad thing about Wetaskiwin retail is you really can't find the most basic of things. For one, two weeks ago I needed a bird cage and bird feed dishes, I checked every store, pet store, wal-mart even the veterinarians, no one had it, even Canadian tire. So of course I had to go to Camrose. It might look like we have stores but really you can't find the most common of things, I mean a bird cage, this town isn't that small.

Pam, at least you checked in Wetaskiwin…good job! That's crazy…no birdcages!

Mike, Wetaskiwin does (did) offer better tax incentives than any other community for the last six years. It has now become deemed not legal to do so due to provincial trade agreements.
Tax breaks are not the answer. What business needs is enough willing customers with enough expendable income to purchase enough goods to make a fair return on investments. Wetaskiwin has an average household income that is about two thirds of the households in Leduc. Wetaskiwin has a trading area about half the size of the Camrose trading area.
These unfortunately are the type of things that effect how businesses make decisions.
Shopping at the local stores that we do have will help them survive and prosper.
Do as Pam did and check locally first ! Then if you have to go elsewhere…
Remember every doallar you spend locally has a 55% chance of getting spent here again..
