In February 2009, the City of Wetaskiwin began its sustainability plan, Wetaskiwin Tomorrow. Over the next two years, Wetaskiwin experienced the largest consultation in the City’s history. Now its up to all of us. Wetaskiwin is an amazing place, with even better potential. To reach that potential involves knowing where we want to go and then working towards that vision together. This website is our attempt at such a vision.
Right now the Airport costs more money to keep open and maintain then it brings in. If we were to expand the airport/ runway it will cost well into the millions. Who is going to pay for this? Tax payers? you? and for what? A change in Wetaskiwin? I do not think this will do much for our dieing little city, I do not think that it will attract the kind of people that will make any difference at all. And you…the tax payer will only be left with a huge bill or something that only a few will be using.
In 2001 the population of Wetaskiwin was 11,154, in 2006 it was 11, 673. I don't consider that a dying (dieing) city at all. A matter of fact that's a 4.7% increase. Not bad for a small town. As for the airport I agree that improvements need to be made to attract more flights. The airport will play a huge part in Wetaskiwin's future whether we all like it or not. So why not make the best of it. If it is costing more to operate than it is bringing in then let's change that! Sitting back and boohooing about taxes will only take us backwards.
