Twin City: Ashoro, Japan

"Ashoro Park Wetaskiwin" by Ron AspWhat is good about Wetaskiwin is it being twinned with Ashoro city in Japan. This association led to the creation of Ashoro Friendship Park as well as student exchange programs.

When bored/drunk/whatever people destroy and vandalize this park all it really shows is that we as a community do not have enough maturity or caring to be able to have something like this This is a sad staement about our city.

We need more pride in our community and something for the townfolk to rally around!

I didn't even know we had a twin city. Very sad. :-(

I agree that there is a lot to be gained from Wetaskiwin's relationship with Ashoro. Unfortunately the twinning has proved costly. As much as our community benefits from exposure to another culture, I think we have a greater responsibility to our citizens. Money could be well spent on local low-cost recreation, subsidizing services or general improvements to infrastructure. The park is lovely, but as mentioned we are constantly repairing it as a result of vandalism. Maybe some well placed funds to support more social programs would generally improve our community and drop our crime rate a little? Just my two cents…
