New playground demonstrates the ‘positive effect’ of individuals in our community

Can you hear the screams?
There will be screams of joy for years to come as Wetaskiwin’s youth explore the new
Parkside playground located at the corner of Parkside Drive and Garden Meadows Drive.
The upgraded park boasts a new swing set, climbing apparatus, plastic slide and spring
teeter-totters. With a near 20-year gap since the last Parkside playground upgrade, child safety had become a concern with citizens who use the park with their children.
Parkside residents Don Proudlock and Peter Murray took the initiative in addressing this concern by approaching City Council with a request for new equipment.
“Once City Council approved our request, my grand-daughter, Peter Murray and I printed off 150 information pamphlets and distributed them around the Parkside area. The pamphlets explained what was happening with the park and asked for volunteer help in removing the old equipment” said Don Proudlock. “We received a great response from the community and on June 25 we finished the job of removing the old equipment within two hours.”
On July 2, ATTPLAY Ltd., a regional park equipment supplier, installed the new playground. The City of Wetaskiwin’s Public Works Department then added new borders around the equipment and replaced the gravel base. A sign was also erected announcing the new park to area residents.
“This playground is a great example of the positive effect one or two individuals can have on their community,” said Bill Elliot, Mayor of the City of Wetaskiwin. “It was also amazing to see so many volunteers and our Public Works department so actively involved.”
This initiative is in line with the Wetaskiwin Tomorrow Community Vision (2010) to increase
leisure opportunities and encourage community involvement. It was made possible by grants from the 1993 Alberta Summer Games legacy fund and Normanna Lodge No. 595. Funds and volunteer time were also provided by the City of Wetaskiwin and community individuals.
