At a meeting on May 9, Council overwhelmingly voted to reject the $14.6 million tender by Continental Earthmovers Ltd – almost 50 per cent more than the original budget estimates for construction. Council also noted a number of important, technical concerns with the bid making the tender incomplete.

"I believe that the city should be asking what areas around the town the citizens would like to see fixed or bettered, things that the city can actually do. Not to mention the road to By-The-Lake-Park, that's an attraction Wetaskiwin has, it's a shame however that it is so terribly hard to drive up there, that road ruins the thought of it being a nice place to go in the afternoon. Our City in Motion needs to live up to that name."

Built in 1982, the Aboussafy Centre is rapidly nearing the end of its life-cycle and serious structural issues are beginning to develop. In the past 27 years the Wetaskiwin region has grown and continues to expand – with an increased and unsustainable demand on public services such as the Aboussafy Centre.

Planning for a new aquatic centre in Wetaskiwin began in 2008 with a study to evaluate existing leisure facilities, determine regional needs and to explore potential options. During the past year, surveys for and concepts of the proposed multi-use facility have been taken to the public. This is your chance to read (and comment on) the feedback we have received.
