So before you start growing as a community you have to attract 30% or 3600 people. This is very transient,however not uncommon. Wetaskiwin must change focus and hire and elect young people with young refreshing ideas that don't include baggage. "Young" means under 30. While leaders are typically older we need the "young" people to step up to the plate and lead this community into the future with a new focus. Look for non typical jobs for the "creative class" of young educated people. Someone who is going to carry the community to the future. They will be 40 soon enough.! Good Health care, good schools and well situated within the province. Wetaskiwin is geographically well positioned for growth. If Wetaskiwin desires to grow we must provide an environment that is inviting to young people, that includes industries and businesses that provide meaningful employment opportunities, a healthy and interesting lifestyle, affordable recreation and a safe community. Wetaskiwin like other agricultural communities is suffering from the "avalanche of aging" of the baby boomers and an economy based on a suffering agricultural industry. Althougfh we all need food, it is not expected that it will be a young persons game ever again, therefore we have to move forward. Wetaskiwin's median age is 43, Beaumont's as an example is 31.5. (2006 Census). Next Census in 2011 we will likely be near the 46 mark and so on and so on until we are extinct. As a community we have to do what it takes to compete with other communities.
