Let get some incentives for businesses to be here! Try free or reduced taxes for the first year. Or start up loans to small businesses trying Wetaskiwin out as a market. The cost of these things are prohibitive for small businesses and being a small town, we should be promoting them.

We have to ask ourselves “Should we be growing?” — how many people can Wetaskiwin support? What is our current water supply? Maybe we need to focus more on making existing things work better and less on (un)sustainable growth.

There is a big difference between retail & economy

There is a big difference between retail & economy. In the past 10 years efforts have been made to try & get more jobs in this town we have failed on each attempt. A packing plant, warehousing & even trying something as absurd as lengthening the runway at the airport to try & become a bedroom community for Fort McMurray.

There is nothing unfriendly about City Hall

First off – there is nothing “un”friendly or “un”welcoming about city hall. Whenever I need some direction I simply ask. There is one thing that could be a little more obvious: who should I ask first? There doesn’t seem to be a main receptionist. It really doesn’t make much difference to me but it may be helpful for those who don’t enjoy public spaces. It has always been a friendly atmosphere for me. -- Ted Hill from Draft Plan Comments

Capitalize on a media liaison role

Unfortunately, this city is developing a reputation to the external world as being a location for frequent crime, substance abuse and addictions, and – in general – a city in decline with very few positive attributes. This is, in part, due to the high proportion of ‘bad news’ stories that make their way into the local papers and other news media. This isn’t the fault of the local media; they’re just doing their job. However, I think it would be exceptionally wise of the city to capitalize on a media liaison role and to have that person feed as many positive, newsworthy stories to the media as possible in a concerted effort to tip the balance of stories in a more positive direction.

On walking into City Hall

For as much effort and money as was put into the renovations at City Hall (which, incidentally, are absolutely beautiful), paying a visit via the main entrance is much like walking into a closet, if you can find it at all. Once inside, depending on the day and time, you are either a) not greeted at all, b) eventually approached by a sour-faced individual who is clearly not the receptionist and has no particular interest in helping you, or c) occasionally helped by someone who may or may not be the receptionist, but is usually on the phone. Since the City is probably not able to improve the situation architecturally (i.e. creating a welcoming area for visitors to gather in), my suggestion would be in two parts: first, improve the signage so visitors can find the main entrance; second, pare off as many of the telephone responsibilities of the front desk person as much as possible, freeing her up to greet and assist visitors, and put all of the other sour-faced people behind closed doors so they cannot continue to indimidate away future visitors and ratepayers. -- from Draft Goal Comments ('Create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere within City Hall')

Put some new people in office

Put some new people in office that wanna raise money for the people to help the people. not for new water towers and lagoons. ffs...fund the family resource center to open back up. a much needed counselling center in a community that is high in domestic violence.

i was born here in the sixties and this town has been home. i am glad everyone is taking the time to type what is on there mind. but what is a concerne here is, if the people on city councel that can do something about the concerns of the taxpayers do not read these blogs as i have, they will not even know that folks in this town are upset and are worried about what has, or in this case, has not happened to wetaskiwin in the last 10, 20, 30 years.

What does Wetaskiwin need?

It is a beautiful, small city with agreat community. We need the CITY to think from out of a box , instead of inside it. Need to be more flexible, so more businesses can move in this city.

I have been here 2 years, and, we have had NO alderman, or the Mayor call and ask, how are we doing. Make people feel WELCOMED.
